Hiking in the Rain: Waterproof Boots

Do you need waterproof hiking boots?

If you are looking to get into hiking or backpacking, one of the first and most critical investments you will make is a pair of hiking footwear, whether that’s boots of shoes. In making a choice of footwear, you might find yourself seeking answers to some common questions new hikers and backpackers ask.

One of these questions is: “Do I need waterproof hiking boots?”

The short answer: No, you don’t even need hiking boots at all, but that is a whole other debate. For this post, we are going to focus solely on why you may or may not want to invest if a pair of waterproof hiking boots or shoes (from here forward “boots” is used when describing boots and shoes).

Waterproof hiking boots have their benefits, but they also have a downside. Unless you only plan to hike in favorable conditions, your feet will eventually get wet from rain or stream crossings. When this happens, what makes your boots waterproof will also make them hard to dry. For this reason, most long-distance hikers and backpackers choose to forego waterproof hiking boots.

With that said, there are certain times when having a good pair of waterproof hiking boots is a good idea.

If you only go hiking or backpacking when rain isn’t in the forecast but know that you will potentially be fording shallow streams or might have a wet trail from prior rain, then waterproof boots should be okay. Also, waterproof hiking boots is a good idea when hiking in the snow.

Waterproof hiking boots for snow

Waterproof hiking boots can be desirable when hiking in snow, but if the snowfall has accumulated above the ankles, then you’ll want gaiters or snow boots to keep the snow from falling into your shoes.

Winter boots are best for hiking in deep snow and are usually waterproof and insulated to help keep your feet warm. However, be sure to wear the proper socks to wick moisture away from your feet, because insulated hiking boots or shoes will keep your feet toasty!

Maintaining waterproof hiking boots

If you do decide to use waterproof hiking boots, maintaining your shoes properly can help lengthen their lifespan.

Clean you hiking boots after use, especially if mud is caked on. If you didn’t get them very dirty, a quick clean with a wet brush will likely be all you need.

Also, if you are using an insole, take it out when you are done. This allows for any moisture captured underneath your insole to dry out, preventing mold. Even if you did not get your feet wet from rain or puddles, it is always a good habit to remove them after each use.

After your hiking boots are cleaned and insoles removed, store them in cool to warm stable temperatures and make sure they are in a dry place. Too much heat can cause glue to melt and cause the leather to crack and excessive moisture can cause molding.

Waterproofing your hiking boots

Some hiking boots are already waterproof but overtime they will lose their effectiveness at keeping your feet dry. You can reapply a DWR finish by using the proper treatment for your boots and following the manufactures instructions.

All waterproofing treatments will require a good cleaning of your hiking boots, so remove the laces first, then use a soft bristle brush with a good soap to clean your boots thoroughly.

You will want to apply the waterproof finish just after cleaning while your hiking boots are still wet, otherwise you will need to spend time soaking them in water again. Again, follow the instructions given on the bottle of whatever treatment you are using.

Once done applying the waterproofing treatment, you’ll need to let your hiking boots dry for a while. Do this in a dry location with low humidity. Using a fan with newspaper stuffed inside the shoes will speed up the process but replace the newspaper frequently. Do not use a heat source to dry your hiking boots!

Recommendations

The best way to choose a pair of hiking boots is to visit your local outfitter and try on a few pairs. Here are a few recommendations worth trying while you’re there.

Note: There are various models for the boots and shoes listed below. I have only linked to the models pictured. These are also all men’s versions. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Merrell Moab 2

The Moab 2 is a very popular model of hiking boot and shoe. You can buy them as a mid-top boot or a low-cut shoe. The Moab 2 also has non-waterproof options, so make sure you are looking at the correct model before choosing to buy.

Salomon X Ultra 3

Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boot

Another popular option, and like the Moab 2’s, the X Ultra 3’s come in a variety of models, including mid-tops, low-tops, waterproof, and non-waterproof.

Vasque Breeze III

Vasque Breeze III Low GTX Hiking Shoe

The Breeze III is yet another great option for a waterproof, or even non-waterproof, hiking boot or shoe. Again, you have the option of choosing mid-tops or low-tops.

Conclusion

Ultimately, deciding whether to use waterproof hiking boots depends on the type of hiking you plan on doing. Again, if you’re only looking to day hike with an occasional weekend trip, waterproof boots may be perfect for you. However, if you plan on hiking long distances where you are likely to spend weeks on the trail, then I recommend choosing a pair of boots or shoes that are not waterproof.

Knowing how you plan to hike will make choosing between a waterproof and non-waterproof hiking footwear an easier choice. Whatever you decide to go with, the most important factor will always be if it fits your needs, and as long as you take care of your feet, they will get you wherever you are going.
